Message from the Department Head
Welcome! Mechanical engineering has a long tradition of excellence in education with an effective hands-on minds-on approach to learning, a landmark of our College of Engineering.
Our department is the broadest and most diverse of engineering disciplines, encompassing a variety of engineering fields and a wide range of technologies and products which affect numerous aspects of human life and society.
Mechanical engineers study, innovate, design, and develop a variety of products extending from robots to automated cars, jet engines to satellites, medical instruments to artificial organs, biomedical products to disease mitigating mechanisms, manufacturing tools to modern materials, and smart transportation systems to advanced utility networks, among numerous others. Mechanical Engineers do this by utilizing fundamental technical areas such as acoustics, dynamics, vibrations, automatic controls, mechanics, computer-aided design, energy management, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, heat transfer, turbomachinery, tribology, robotics, and biomechanics, just to name a few. Mechanical engineering is a challenging, rewarding, and highly respected profession. We support this discipline through a commitment to excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and service missions.
Our faculty are highly accomplished and many of them are world-renowned in their specific fields of specialty. Their advanced research practice and exceptional expertise enrich the learning experiences of our students. Our comprehensive state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories provide unprecedented opportunities for students to learn, practice, and conduct research in mechanical engineering. Opportunities for cross- and inter-disciplinary research and studies are abundant, which is another milestone of our department.
A large number of ME Affiliate and Adjunct faculty across many areas of engineering and science collaborate with our faculty and support our students. Furthermore, the department’s strong ties with the University Institutes provides additional enriched learning and research opportunities at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
We admit and graduate students who not only strive to excel, but also love challenges. They leave the campus as highly skilled and sought-after engineers and leaders. There are many opportunities for our students to get involved with hands-on projects, experiential learning, and technical competitions. A few examples include Robotic Challenges, Formula Car, Additive Manufacturing, and many more.
We greatly value diversity within the department and society and strive to promote, enhance, and create a totally inclusive and caring environment for all of our constituents. I am proud of the accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni who are each exemplary in their own respect. All of us strive to excel in everything we do and serve our constituents as much as possible. We do our best to exemplify the Virginia Tech’s spirit of Ut Prosim (That I may serve). Students engage as volunteers in a variety of humanitarian service projects ranging from design and development for local industry to designing and building infrastructure in developing nations overseas. The unique mix of service and academic excellence means our students are exceedingly in demand, and industry and government offer tremendous recruitment opportunities on campus.
