The research of Michael Roan, a professor in mechanical engineering, has been featured on the cover of the January 2021 issue of the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.

The article, “Probability of detection of electric vehicles with and without added warning sounds,” is a report of  Roan’s ongoing research to increase safety between quiet-running electric vehicles and pedestrians. Adding sounds to electric vehicles to alert pedestrians of their presence is important to public safety, particularly in the case of pedestrians with hearing impairments.

Since 1929, The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA) has been the leading source of theoretical and experimental research results in the broad interdisciplinary subject of sound.

The journal serves physical scientists, life scientists, engineers, psychologists, physiologists, architects, musicians, and speech communication specialists.
