Information for Prospective Graduate Students

Students work with a 3D printer in the DREAMS Lab.

Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering. We are a thriving intellectual community engineering the frontiers of mechanical science. We cultivate and inspire innovative leaders, discover fundamental breakthroughs, and solve grand challenges for societal impact.

Our graduate students participate in a modern and interdisciplinary curriculum designed for the future leaders of engineering. Our portfolio includes traditional degree paths to the PhD and MS through a research-focused plan of study, along with professional degrees and certificates that build depth and breadth of knowledge through advanced coursework. Register for an information session to learn more and speak with our program representatives.

The engineering mechanics (EM) program is strongly rooted in physics and mathematics, the basis of all mechanical sciences, and provides unique, interdisciplinary opportunities for research on design projects with far-reaching impact.

The mechanical engineering (ME) program brings together research, design, development, and creation to things that move. From the smallest cells to the largest spacecraft, mechanical engineers are trained in the science behind what makes things work.

The nuclear engineering (NE) program gain a deep understanding of the core subjects of nuclear fuel cycle, radiation detection and shielding, reactor analysis, reactor safety, and particle transport. Each PhD student completes a comprehensive research project, culminating in a dissertation. Along the way, students develop critical skills in research design and deployment, oral presentations, and scientific writing.
