Belal Shanab, a PhD candidate in mechanical engineering, has been awarded a 2025 Commonwealth of Virginia Engineering and Science (COVES) Policy Fellowship.

Shanab is currently pursuing his PhD in the area of clean and renewable energy with Associate Professor Alexandrina Untaroiu. He has expertise in wind turbines, hydropower, and other renewable energy systems. His work has included computational fluid dynamics, design optimization, and hybrid renewable energy systems. Also, he serves as a teaching assistant for multiple courses in the Mechanical Engineering department.

"I am thrilled to join this opportunity to bridge my expertise in renewable energy with impactful science policy solutions," Shanab said. "The COVES Fellowship provides a unique platform to tackle pressing challenges, collaborate with leaders in policymaking, and turn cutting-edge research into actionable strategies that benefit society. This experience is an important step in my commitment to advancing sustainable technologies and driving meaningful change at the intersection of science, engineering, and public policy."

The 12-week COVES Fellowship is administered by the Virginia Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine (VASEM). Graduate student and postdoctoral fellows serve as science advisors in a variety of possible placements, including legislative offices, executive agencies, or prominent companies and nonprofits in the state of Virginia. Fellows gain experience by serving their host office and performing relevant tasks such as researching, drafting, and revising relevant policies. Fellows are also paired with a VASEM member who serves as an experienced science policy mentor throughout the fellowship.
