Most publications in an academic journal are submitted by authors seeking the review of their peers. This is a method for proving the value of the work. Far less frequently, a publishing journal will invite authors to submit a paper, perhaps because the author has exceptional expertise or works in an area the journal wishes to feature.

Such an invitation came to the lab of Associate Professor Pinar Acar. Her work focuses in converting the properties of materials into mathematical models for predicting how they may respond in different environments. Within that realm, there is always the potential for uncertainty. These are rare events that occur the least often, but predicting them is still important.

In the invited paper from Advanced Engineering Materials, Acar’s team was looking at the impacts of uncertainty on microstructures, or the building blocks beyond what can be seen with the human eye, of aerospace materials. Found in the hulls and mechanics of airplanes, these materials are subject to a wide range of temperatures and conditions.

This review article was also unique because it was solely contributed by the members of her lab.

“This paper was authored by current and former graduate students,” Acar said. “That makes this achievement particularly meaningful.”

The list of authors for the paper include:

  • Maruf Billah, who is currently pursuing his PhD.
  • Mohamed Elleithy, who is currently pursuing his PhD.
  • Waris Khan, who is currently pursuing his PhD.
  • Saltuk Yıldız, who is currently pursuing his PhD.
  • Zekeriya Ender Eger, who is currently pursuing his PhD.
  • Sheng Liu, who completed his PhD in May 2024.
  • Matthew Long, who completed his Master’s degree in May 2024.
