Shima Shahab, Mary V. Jones Fellow and Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering, has been named an Emerging Leader in Smart Materials and Structures by IOP Science.

The designation is given to a top researcher in their field who completed their PhD within the last ten years. In that time, Shahab has published extensively, working with her team in the Multiphysics Intelligent and Dynamical Systems (MInDS) laboratory to produce novel approaches in contactless ultrasound power transfer, ultrasound responsive polymer-based systems, ultrasound atomization, drug delivery, and acoustic holograms.  Shahab has also joined with colleagues across campus, developing new methods in dust collection with mining and imagining the movements of sound waves as dance choreography with liberal arts.

Shahab has been the recipient of the National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award, the NSF EAGER Award, the ASME Early Achievement Award, has been named to the 2023 APL Rising Stars Collection by the American Institute of Physics for research in the area of interdisciplinary applied physics, and is currently Associate Editor of the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures (JIMSS).
