October 17, 2025
Corina Sandu, professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has been named a fellow of the International Society for Terrain-Vehicle Systems (ISTVS).
In a press release from the society, Sandu was recognized for outstanding contributions to the advancement of terramechanics (the study of how vehicle wheels interact with surfaces such as dirt) and the development of new off-road vehicle systems. Her special expertise in this field of dynamics and pioneering research define her as a recognized expert in her field.
Sandu has published 110 journal papers, 33 of which were published in the Journal of Terramechanics, several of which rank high in citations. She has also mentored 26 Ph.D. and 29 master’s students.
Varsha Swamy, who recently completed her PhD and worked with Sandu in research, commented on the impact of the professor.
"I’ve learned so much from Dr. Sandu," Swamy said. "Not just about terramechanics, but about how to think like a researcher. She’s brilliant, organized, and dedicated, but she’s also kind and genuinely cares about her students. Her mentorship goes beyond research — she teaches you how to think, how to communicate, and how to lead with integrity. I wish her all the more success in life!"
